AUTO INSURANCE

Auto insurance is a complicated matter.  Many people have an insurance policy but do not exactly understand how they are covered or what they will do if they find themselves in the position of needing to utilize their insurance.  Discover the basic types of car insurance and find out how to obtain the coverage you need for your particular situation.

Comprehensive Insurance

Comprehensive insurance is a coverage that helps pay to replace or repair your vehicle if it's stolen or damaged in an incident that's not a collision. Comprehensive, sometimes called "other than collision" coverage, typically covers damage from fire, vandalism or falling objects (like a tree or hail).

Comprehensive coverage may be a worthwhile investment if you have a newer car and want to help protect your finances in case of theft or damage. Consider whether you could afford to pay for expensive repairs to your car or replace it. If not, comprehensive coverage may be worth the cost for you.

Auto liability insurance

Auto liability insurance coverage helps cover the costs of the other driver's property and bodily injuries if you're found at fault in an accident. ... If you have liability insurance, your insurance provider will cover costs for the driver's damaged car, minus your deductible, and up to your covered limit.

Auto liability insurance helps cover another person's medical expenses and property damage via these two types of coverage:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage (sometimes abbreviated as 'BI')
If you're at fault for an accident that injures another person, bodily injury liability coverage helps pay for their medical expenses.

  • Property damage liability coverage (sometimes abbreviated as 'PD')
If you cause an accident that damages someone else's property (their car, for example), property damage liability coverage helps pay for repairs.

Uninsured Motorist Insurance

Also known as Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury insurance (UMBI), Uninsured Motorist insurance (UM) pays for injuries, such as medical expenses, that result from an accident caused by a driver who is uninsured. UM insurance also protects you and your passengers if struck by a hit-and-run driver.

Underinsured Motorist Coverage

What Is Underinsured Motorist Coverage?  The purpose of underinsured motorist coverage is to pay for your medical bills in the event the at-fault driver does not carry sufficient automobile liability insurance to cover your losses.

Now that you understand a bit more about the different types of auto insurance available, you are probably ready to find the right coverage for you.  The best way to do this is to work with an independent agency that will allow you to compare insurance quotes online.  By doing this, you can rest assured you are getting the best deal as well as getting the personal attention you need.
